Who is this procedure for?
Breast augmentation is for women who wish to increase the volume of their breasts for various reasons such as:
- A volume considered naturally insufficient in relation to their body shape.
- A loss of volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.
- Correction of breast asymmetry.
- As part of breast reconstruction after breast cancer.
Consultation process

The first consultation allows for discussion of the patient’s motivations and expectations. A complete clinical examination is performed to assess the breast morphology and skin quality. The surgeon explains the different surgical techniques (implants, fat grafting, composite), the types of implants (shape, volume, projection), and the placement of scars. Additional examinations, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, may be requested. A detailed quote and an information document are provided to the patient. A mandatory reflection period of 15 days is required before any decision is made.
The procedure in practice
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia. The duration varies depending on the chosen technique: approximately one hour for implants, and up to two hours for fat grafting or a composite technique. Hospitalization is most often outpatient (discharge the same day) or overnight. The technical principles depend on the method:
- Breast implants: the implant is inserted through a small incision, most often in the inframammary fold, around the areola, or under the arm. It can be placed in front of or behind the pectoral muscle.
- Breast fat grafting: fat is harvested by liposuction from one or more areas of the body (abdomen, hips, thighs), then purified before being reinjected into the breasts.
- Composite augmentation: this technique combines the placement of implants with fat grafting for a customized result.

Post-operative care
Post-operative recovery is generally marked by moderate pain, well-controlled with painkillers. Edema (swelling) and bruising appear on the breasts and the fat harvesting areas. Wearing a support bra is necessary for several weeks. Return to work is possible after a few days of rest, depending on the nature of the work. Sports activities can be resumed gradually after about a month. Regular post-operative follow-up is provided by the surgeon.
Results and scars
The result is immediately visible, but it takes several months to appreciate the final result, as the swelling subsides and the breasts soften. The scars are discreet and their placement is chosen to be as inconspicuous as possible. Scar quality depends on each patient’s skin. The goal is to achieve a natural-looking breast, in harmony with the silhouette.
Risks and possible complications
All surgical procedures carry risks. For breast augmentation, complications are rare. They may include a hematoma, an infection, or sensory disturbances. For implants, the main risk is the formation of a capsular contracture, which can harden the breast. The risks specific to each technique are explained in detail during the consultation.
Prices and coverage
Breast augmentation for purely aesthetic purposes is not covered by Social Security. Coverage is possible in certain cases of reconstruction after cancer or breast malformations. Prices are indicative and vary depending on the technique used.
